I woke up in Easter egg hunt mode. 4/20 fell on Easter this year so everything had to be timed juuuust right for me to be able to attend. After finding all the eggs the Easter Bunny hid I had a couple hours to relax before I had to start getting ready to head downtown. I needed to be at Vapor Central by 11:30 to meet up with Dex, a cameraman that SwearNet.com arranged to follow me around for the day. 10:00 came and it was time for me to leave - I was off to celebrate 4/20!
I arrived at Vapor Central around 11:00am and it was already full of people! Flags were being distributed, people were finalizing their outfits for the day and many joints were being smoked. I chatted with everyone while I waited for Dex to arrive. Dex and I were going to be walking around the event interviewing and celebrating with people in the crowd and backstage. He got there about 5 minutes before the march to Yonge/Dundas Square which gave us just enough time to film an intro and everybody getting ready to leave.
Everybody that was in Vapor Central lined up behind the truck that we were to follow to the square. Matt Mernagh had his megaphone and was leading the crowd in chants and also spreading cannabis knowledge while we made our way down Yonge Street. The truck was pumping Classified tracks and lots of people were singing along (including me). Erin & Chris Goodwin along with other Hash Mob members kept the crowd on one side of the street which, after watch them, I realized is quite hard to do. People were taking over the sidewalks, store owners came out to cheer everybody on. It was beautiful! When we arrived at Yonge and Dundas, most people that followed the truck went up on stage and cheered on with the crowd of people that had already formed there. Opus went on stage to his 'lemonade style stand' and proclaimed "The dealer is in"... which lead to people rushing the stage hoping to be able to purchase from him. Matt quickly captivated the crowd and the 4/20 celebration had begun!
Paul Lewin (Matt's lawyer, NORML Canada) spoke to the crowd and then Tracy and Opus from Opus Fourtwenty LIVE w/ Tracy Curley headed on stage and spoke about cannabis legalization while the beautiful Hash Mob girls held bristle boards that spelled "VOTE" The crowd was very attentive to them while speaking. I took a short break from filming and went and sat at the side of the stage for a few minutes to smoke a joint. While I was sitting there I heard Jay Danger performing his music on stage. I ran around to the front of the stage to check out his set and take a picture of him performing. When Jay's performance was over it was comedy time!!! Mike RIta was the host of this part of the show. He brought up a handful of comics that at times, had the crowd in stitches which is hard to do considering most people are paying attention to their bongs or joints. Like I said, these guys were hilarious!!!
It was time for me to go on stage and give away some prizes. VapeApeUSA.com gave me a vape pen and Adrian gave me the rigs complete with nails. Mike introduced me to the crowd and told them about the contest and I explained the prizes. The first 2 people to tweet me @TheAmyAnonymous with the hashtag #Happy420 would win the prizes. My phone blew up! I realllllly had to scroll through my notifications to find the first and second tweet. I told Mike the winners names and he verified it was their account when they came up to claim their prize. I had 1 rig left. We decided to ask a trivia question. Maybe it was the meds but for the life of me I couldn't come up with a question, nor could he. We figured out the question "Which year was Toronto's first 4/20 celebration?" He asked the crowd and I told them the 4th correct answer would get the prize. Why did I make it more difficult- nooo idea! I stood on stage desperately trying to get to the first person that answered correctly and work my way to the fourth correct answer. There were so many different answers! 1873, 2014, 0000, 2002 but I finally found the 4th correct one. We announced the winner and congratulated everybody. I thanked Mike and left the stage. I met back up with Rob and a few friends and chatted with the crowd.
The cab was so quiet that it gave me time to reflect on the day and all the craziness that was this year's 4/20. It was kick a$$! Fabulous day!!! There were more people this year than last. Not one arrest or incident happened. Our city should be proud, really proud!!! So should the organizers! You did a stellar job this year, much like you've done n the past!
Up next: GLOBAL MARIJUANA MARCH!!!!! Saturday May 3rd. See ya there
